Food and Nutrition Security Interns Jobs in Kenya

Position Title: Food and Nutrition Security Interns
Location: Nutrition and Health Program Plus -Busia, Tharaka Nithi, Samburu, Kitui and Marsabit
Project Description: Nutrition and Health Program plus Kenya goal is to increase access and demand for nutrition services and improve food and nutrition security, as well as commodity management support.
At national level Nutrition and Health Program plus aims to expand Nutrition Assessment Counseling and Support (NACS) services beyond HIV, offering technical and financial support to roll-out NACS to include High Impact Nutrition Interventions (HINI).
To help achieve this, national and sub-national levels will be engaged to create a heightened profile for nutrition and strengthen budgeting, planning and monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
Nutrition and Health Program plus will provide commodity management support for vulnerable populations following PEPFAR Food and Nutrition guidance and be expanded at national level to reach additional clients. A critical element of this work will involve coordination with and strengthening of existing USAID/Kenya and East Africa efforts.
Job Summary: The Food and Nutrition Interns will work as apprentices. They will work closely with the Deputy Chief of Party, Agriculture Specialist, Nutrition Specialist, M&E Specialist, Sub/County Agriculture and Livestock Officers, Sub/County Nutrition Coordinator, implementing partners, Department of Education, and other NHPplus staff to provide technical support for community NACS and agri-nutrition activities designed to contribute towards reduction in stunting.
These activities shall include increasing market access and consumption of diverse and quality foods while embracing improved maternal, infant and young child diets, as well as increasing resilience of vulnerable households and communities.
Essential Job Functions:  Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Identifying and promoting/supporting/implementing:
  1. investments that target vulnerable groups to increase food production for consumption, and increase women’s empowerment, including assets, use of energy and time, and income
  2. livelihood opportunities that promote gender equity in combination with achieving nutrition objectives
  3. community driven development approaches to enhance social, economic, and environmental resilience, through effectively linking vulnerable clients with food security, livelihood and economic support.
  • Promoting and strengthening linkages between agriculture and health frontline service providers to work towards improving food security and nutrition at community and household levels.
  • Establishing linkages and facilitating collaboration across relevant sectors, departments, public and private partners and stakeholders:
  1. to scale up targeted nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive services appropriate to local needs and contexts through a gender lens
  2. for sharing information, planning, programming and service provision at both health facility and community levels
  • Promoting: awareness and consumption of diversified, nutrient dense, fortified and nutritionally adequate foods; High Impact Nutrition Interventions (HINI) during the 1000-days window of opportunity and among women and youth; agri-food and nutrition sensitive technologies; best practices for food preparation & utilization; and energy & time saving technologies
  • Supporting implementation of the community approach for Nutrition Assessment Counselling and Support (NACS), Integrated Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN)
  • Coordinating capacity building and technical support on agri-foods and nutrition issues including nutrition sensitive technologies, dietary diversification and nutrient dense diets
  • Promoting food safety including appropriate methods of handling, preservation, processing, storage and utilization of agri-foods
  • Promoting/supporting water and sanitation activities
  • Executing any other activities and strategies based on the approved NHPplus work plan.
Minimum Requirements Standards:
  • University degree in Nutrition, Home Economics or other relevant disciplines and certified by the KNDI Council.
  • (A master’s degree in above mentioned disciplines or Bachelors degree with three years research experience, will be an added advantage)
  • Field experience is essential as this position will be based in the five focus counties of Busia, Tharaka Nithi, Samburu, Kitui and Marsabit.
  • (Ability to speak local language will be an added advantage)

Reporting to the Head Housekeeper, the successful candidates’ responsibility will be but not limited to:
